Gronda dei Custodi

I look at the Gronda dei Custodi wallpaper and recognise at once the architectural gesture that produces it: a curved eaves cornice, a memory of the Dravidian style, extending across the whole width of the composition. The profile runs from a deep cavetto to a beaded fillet, without interruption, as if the roof itself were breathing. Along this edge, at regular intervals, horseshoe arches open — the kudus — each pierced by a small trefoil vent and ringed by a carved rope; between one arch and the next, a carved head leans out on a projecting bracket, the features hard, the eyebrows strong, the hair gathered into a low diadem. It is a single frieze, horizontal, dense, with no gaps: the eye runs from head to arch to head, in a rhythm that knows no pause.

What I love in this design is its fidelity to the stone: the warm ochre of the sandstone, the grey-brown that gathers in the undercuts, the lichen patina in the more sheltered folds. It is not a light ornament: it is a fragment of lived architecture, carved by hands that worked the rock blow after blow, leaving their own striations as an involuntary signature.
