Piazza Metafisica

I sign the Piazza Metafisica wallpaper as one signs an architectural project: with the measure of someone who knows that silence, in a square, counts as much as stone. The design belongs to Italian rationalism, the season in which form strips itself of every superfluous ornament to state, in a few clean gestures, its whole constructive truth.

I look at the scene as it would appear to someone arriving from a side street onto a new city square: an isolated civic tower, tall and unadorned, its rendered shaft interrupted only by a thin band of windows and by a flat cornice that stops the eye before the sky. Around it, a long continuous portico marks the perimeter with squared piers and round arches, the upper floors set out in regular bands of rectangular windows. The paving, a wide grid of stone slabs, opens a free and disciplined space where travertine, pale ochre stucco and grey stone warm under raking shadows.

In this sobriety I find a universal thought: order as a form of quiet, measure as a gesture of respect towards those who inhabit the space.
