Palazzo delle Acque Rosse

In the Palazzo delle Acque Rosse wallpaper I wanted to hold the moment when architecture looks out over water and is reflected in it, whole, without haste. It is the front of a Mughal palace in red sandstone and white marble, stretching from one end of the wall to the other: stacked terraces, jharokha balconies on carved brackets, corner turrets crowned with chhatri domes, and at the centre a broad stone stair descending to the river.

The river is not a background, it is a completion: its surface gathers cusped arches, lozenge mouldings and lotus rosettes and returns them rippled, like a second architecture made of light and movement. From a distance you read the solemn symmetry of the palace; close to you find the minute carving, the individual brackets, the chhatri pinnacles along the roofline — stonework that never tires of being looked at.

For me this design speaks of the threshold: the point where built power agrees to be reflected, to become double and fragile on the water, and in that fragility finds its most human measure. It is an image of a domestic threshold wherever it is hung — in a house, an office, a hotel lobby — because every wall that chooses the Palazzo delle Acque Rosse wallpaper becomes a bank itself.
