Inflessioni Cromatiche

In my Inflessioni Cromatiche wallpaper I wanted to hold the instant in which a rigid surface decides to bend and to lift off the ground. The design belongs to Arte Madi, the movement that refuses the rectangular frame in order to become pure geometry, plane against plane, colour against colour.

I describe what I see: nine or ten large sheets, like splinters of folded material, rising from a single implied ground line. Each form curves downwards in a gentle concave arc, then turns over into a full convex swell along the upper edge, like slabs tilted at different angles. Top right, two or three planes overlap and become the visual anchor of the composition; bottom left the forms thin out, isolated, letting the white space breathe. Red, cobalt blue, egg yellow and black — with a couple of planes left pure white — are laid flat, without gradation, each assigned to a whole form, according to the chromatic discipline that Madi made its own.

Close up you discover an incised line that follows every change of curvature, a chink of white ground where the planes overlap, small chamfered corners marking where one edge meets another. It is an essential script, and yet a living one, at ease with any wall and any light.
