Insonnia d’Asfalto

I sign the Insonnia d’Asfalto wallpaper the way one signs a memory one does not want to let go of: a motel sign lit up in the night, held on a slender pole above an empty car park. It is a Hopperesque style, heir to the great American painting of Edward Hopper, that I wanted to give back here — loaded brushstrokes, planes laid down with decision, light as the only character in a motionless scene.

I tell what I see: the rectangular box of the sign, a single word shining, the smaller vacancy panel just below; the wide flat asphalt, marked by parking lines now faded; a row of closed doors along the low front of the motel, and a two-lane road curving away under a starless sky. The amber and acid green of the neon burn against the deep indigo of the night: a core of heat in a sea of stillness.

This is not melancholy: it is the suspension of someone looking at a light left on while the world around them rests. Every home, every office, every hotel has a moment like this — a still instant before setting off again.
