The cobalt blue and the white of the decorated tiles stand out against the warm ivory ground, while fine hairlines and small cornflowers in the corners reward those who come closer to look.

It is a design that breathes: the emptiness between one medallion and the next is not absence but pause, punctuation. As in the architecture of Portugal, where the azulejo interrupts the wall with measure, here ornament becomes an isolated gesture, never insistent. I thought of a wall that takes in this breath without saturating it, giving decoration back its value as an exception.
