Orizzonte di Terracotta

I am the Orizzonte di Terracotta wallpaper, and I come from a simple gesture: a few horizontal bands laid across an ivory field, without haste, without calculated symmetry.

I belong to the style of stripes — here not the regular weave the name would suggest, but a sparse and considered version: four or five solid bands, some thin, others almost double, separated by intervals of empty space that never repeat alike. Ink black, burnt terracotta, muted ochre and dusty powder pink settle on the ivory like sediments of the same landscape, gathered slightly towards the upper half of the central register, while below a wide breath of open field remains. From a distance the composition asserts itself in an instant, a broad and confident gesture. Close to, its deliberate hesitations appear: a band interrupted by a fine ivory thread, widths that resemble one another without ever quite coinciding. It is in this silent precision that care is measured — the care with which, in our weaving, every edge stays clean and every colour full, with no shadow to distract from the geometry.

I choose the silence of flat surfaces because I believe that measure, when it is true, needs no ornament.
