Serpeggio di Maiolica

I call this design the Serpeggio di Maiolica wallpaper because in its continuous undulation I find again the old gesture of the brush on glazed ceramic. Here the tendril does not climb: it flows, in parallel horizontal waves, and at every crest and every trough it carries pairs of pointed leaves that alternate direction — up in one wave, down in the next — until they interlock with the row above and the row below in a tight, continuous warp, without a single patch of exposed ground.

It is the maiolica style that governs every chromatic choice: clean drawn outlines, flat and even fields of colour as the Italian ceramic tradition requires. Stem and profiles are a full cobalt, the leaves alternate cobalt and warm ochre, and small terracotta berries dot the axils, all laid on an ivory ground that lets the design breathe without ever interrupting it.

In this regular interlace, which repeats identical to itself from module to module, I read the patient discipline of the craftsman: a motif made to have neither beginning nor end, to accompany a whole wall with the same measure with which a potter decorates the rim of a plate. It is not decoration that imposes itself, but a weave that offers itself, suited to a home, a studio, a lobby that wants its free wall to tell something authentic.
