The story
I am the Susino d’Inchiostro wallpaper, and I am born of a branch of flowering plum climbing from an old gnarled trunk, twisted by time, towards slender branches that open in the air like whip strokes. I belong to suibokuga, the ink painting of the Zen tradition: the trunk is built with broken, dry brushstrokes that reveal the torn bark and the hollow knots of the wood, while the branches run in single, decided strokes that thin and thicken with the pressure of the hand. On the branches open five-petalled flowers, barely veiled in pink, with a touch of vermilion at the centre, beside buds still closed and short spur branches. The composition is asymmetrical: the trunk anchors low, to one side, and lets wide empty spaces breathe, while the blossom gathers only where the branches touch the light.
In this essential gesture I find the patience of nature reborn in the frost, the silent strength that survives fracture and flowers all the same. It is an image of gentle resistance, of a beauty that needs no ornament to be complete.
