The story
I sign this Terme Imperiali wallpaper the way you sign an architecture: with respect for the stone and for the time that smoothed it. It belongs to the style of Roman imperial architecture, the kind able to bend raw matter into gestures at once monumental and intimate.
What I see, each time I look at it, is a vast bath hall built on a colossal scale: rows of stone piers rising to meet in groin vaults, every rib springing cleanly from a moulded impost, the surface of the vault marked out in shallow coffered bays. Below, a sequence of marble pools steps down towards the centre of the hall, their rims marked by continuous bands; along the walls, a steady rhythm of semicircular niches frames togaed marble figures, each on its own plinth. Everything is strictly axial, symmetrical, drawn towards a distant point of shadow.
In this architecture I read a lesson in measure: grandeur that does not shout, but arranges itself, repeats, breathes. It is the echo of a power that knew how to build to last, and that today, in the Terme Imperiali wallpaper, returns to occupy a wall as it would occupy a public atrium — with the same disciplined quiet.
