The story
This is the Ventaglio di Sienna wallpaper, a design belonging to the great herringbone family, which here opens like a fan, rotating sector after sector around a single point set in the central band of the panel.
The elongated boards interlock in V-shaped pairs, thin and crisp, arranged in wedges radiating from the pivot: near the centre the ribs are small and tight, towards the edges they widen into broader, more spaced chevrons. Each sector keeps its own angle, advancing in measured steps from one section to the next, composing a single continuous drawing, never repeated, where terracotta, ochre, rust and cream alternate light and dark while staying within the same warm family.
I like to think of this interlace as a time that dilates: what begins small and concentrated finds, as it advances, the space to grow without losing its rule. It is the same discipline that governs the laying of a real herringbone floor, brought here to the wall as a painterly, continuous gesture. In the Ventaglio di Sienna wallpaper every mitred joint, every small shift of angle between one sector and the next, speaks of a geometry made to be read from a distance and enjoyed close to.
