The story
I call this weave of elongated slats interlacing like the fibres of a basket the Vimini d’Ambra wallpaper, imagined to return to the wall the ancient gesture of plaiting. The style is that of basketweave, the interlace of textile tradition and of the finest parquet: rectangular blocks built from thin bands, arranged in horizontal and vertical groups that lock at right angles, block after block, without a break.
Every slat is a full hue – deep umber, caramel, pale sand – alternating with its neighbours so that the eye recomposes the weave. A thin darker seam separates each band, and small shifts of tone within each block suggest the relief of a warp rising and falling, as happens in real plaiting. It is a geometry that seeks not surprise but hold: surface after surface, the drawing repeats with no edges and no interruptions, and wraps the wall like a continuous fabric.
In drawing this weave I thought of an industrious calm, of the patience of hands that plait, brought into a flat and rigorous texture suited to any interior – a home, a studio, a lobby – provided a free space remains on the wall where the light can settle.
