The story
The Piega Ritrosa wallpaper shows a single large relief that seems to project from the wall and then, just where it should become sharpest, withdraws into its own ground. With this design I belong to the language of Neoconcretism: folded planes, wedges and stepped crests built from three or four overlapping trapezoids and triangular flaps, tilted at different angles around an asymmetrical mass set slightly off centre.
Every plane carries a tonal band that imitates the light-and-shadow logic of a real relief, but the gradient reverses and cuts off exactly at the point of greatest apparent projection: the lighter edge of a wedge dissolves into the same flat tone as the ground, and the form, instead of standing out, sinks back into the wall. It is a question I put to the very matter of painting: what remains of form when the light that should reveal it hides it instead? Around the nucleus a few lesser fragments are set at a distance, balancing the composition without crowding it, within a restrained palette of warm ochre, raw terracotta and dusty grey-beige, where figure and ground share the same values.
Close to, fine seams mark where one plane meets another, with a slightly scumbled brushstroke and uneven matt edges that reward a near gaze.
